Inverted microscopes have their light source and condensor on top of the microscope while the viewing optics are placed underneath the optical stage. Inverted microscopes are best used for conditions were cells or other life will be at the bottom of a container or concave slide. They also allow more room for micromanipulation as the tools for that purpose require more space than the close objective lenses normally permit.
