Description

Silicon, Si, is an element, number 14 on the periodic chart. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust second to Oxygen and is the eighth most-common element in the universe. Pure Silicon is classified as a metalloid because it is not a real metal even though it has a shiny and metal-like appearance.

Very pure silicon, like this specimen, is used to make semi-conductors, liquid crystal displays and solar panels. Because Silicon is too reactive with other elements to be found naturally in a pure state, it has to be refined from rocks containing silicon using an electric furnace that heats to over 2,500 degree F. More purity is obtained by growing a giant single crystal of silicon from molten Silicon.

Samples are approximately 1-1/2" on their longest size. Samples will vary. Price is per piece.
