Description
Scientists still differ in their hypotheses regarding the extinction of dinosaurs, but none of them ever postulated that it might be your tea or coffee!? As you drink your beverage watch the dinosaurs turn to fossils before your eyes.
The image you see when the mug is cold is painted over with a temperature-sensitive dye called a lencodye. These organic chemicals change color when heat energy causes their molecules to shift to subtly different structures (generally bet ween colorless lueco forms and colored forms). These structures absorb and reflect light differently, so they appear as very different colors when printed on an object. This means that when this mug is hot you see the image painted with the dye, then as the mug cools down, the dye becomes transparent and the picture below it is gradually revealed.
