Description
Turquinite is a name given to Howlite that has been dyed to look like turquoise, which is more rare and expensive than turquinite. Howlite is basic silcarborate of calcium. Ca2B5SiO9(OH)5 and is found in nodules resembling little cauliflower heads that are imbedded in clay where borax deposites are found.
Howlite's true color is white and it is porous, which makes it very suitable for dyeing. Experimenting with different colors, people have learned they can make howlite look very much like real turqoise.
Origin: Africa.
