Description

A Mendocino Motor is a floating, solar powered motor that hovers by use of magnets. It receives power from the solar panels (4 in all) that are on each face of the rotor. The rotor floats on a base which also has magnets that repulse the magnets built into the ends of the rotor that allow it to 'float' much like the manually powered Magnetic Spinner. A large, powerful magnet is set in the center of the base.

When light strikes one of the panels it creates electrical current, which in turn creates a magnetic field. This field interacts with the magnetic field of the base's central magnet and causes the rotor to spin. The process repeats with each panel and the rotor can build up quite a level of speed.
